María Zuleica Guerra Godoy, contextual psychologist

Hello, I am María Zuleica. My way of seeing therapy is different from Laura’s, and that difference is what completes how we work at PsicoDiversa. Here I tell you about mine.

Who I am

If you have got this far, you may be looking for relief, answers, or just to understand a little better who makes up PsicoDiversa. My name is María Zuleica Guerra Godoy; together with Laura Nhate I founded the center, in the Carretera de Cádiz area of Málaga.

My way of understanding therapy starts from a simple idea: nobody is broken, so it is not about “fixing” anyone, but about supporting each person to find their own resources and to build a life that truly feels like their own. Or, as I like to put it: that everyone can flourish in their own reality.

Before turning to psychology, I spent seven years working as a social worker with people in situations of exclusion and extreme vulnerability. From that period I kept a conviction that still guides the way I understand this kind of support: even in the most difficult moments, every person holds an inner strength of their own. After that I specialized in third-wave contextual therapies: ACT (my main training), FAP and DBT.

I keep training in these therapies every year: they are models with a scientific basis that are reviewed and updated along with the research, just like the rest of the ones we use at the center.

My training: acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

ACT starts from an almost counterintuitive idea: instead of fighting with what you feel, you make room for it, and that energy goes into building a life that looks like your values.

Anxiety, fear or sadness do not go away by willpower, and that fight usually tires you out more than the emotion itself. ACT suggests making room for difficult emotions so they stop deciding for you, and putting the focus on what really matters: taking steps in that direction, even if the distress still shows up now and then.

ACT is a scientifically supported model and it is used, among other things, in processes of emotional dependency, addictions, anxiety and depression: the ground this center works on. At PsicoDiversa we do not understand dependency as a “vice” or as a lack of willpower, but as a way of managing deep pain; my training in contextual therapies is part of that outlook. How it fits with the rest of our approach — EMDR, IFS and the full formula — is explained in how we work.

The social side of the project

The social side of PsicoDiversa is our doing too. We founded the PsicoDiversa Association, a non-profit organization that organizes free talks in schools in the province of Málaga, and together we host the “En Modo Psi” podcast, where we talk about mental health with guests. On the podcast I sign as “Zule,” so if you look for me under that name, that is me too.

Frequently asked questions

What does “contextual psychologist” mean?

That my training is in contextual therapies, a family that looks beyond the symptom: it pays attention to the context where the symptom appears, to the person’s history and to their relationships. They are called “third wave” because they come after classical behaviorism and cognitive behavioral therapy: they do not replace them, they extend them.
