How to Recover from Narcissistic Abuse: Signs and Trauma Therapy in Málaga
Published on April 21, 2026
Leaving a relationship is painful, but leaving a relationship with a narcissistic person is devastating. It is not a simple break-up; it feels as if you had to rebuild your identity from scratch. You doubt your memories, you feel that everything has been your fault, and your self-esteem is completely fractured.
If you have got this far looking for answers, at PsicoDiversa we want to validate you: you are not going crazy. What you feel has an explanation: a deep psychological wearing-down that leaves a mark. Today we explain how to identify what you have lived through, and how specialized treatment can help you recover.
The anatomy of narcissistic abuse
Narcissistic abuse rarely involves physical violence, which makes it enormously invisible and hard to report (even to the people around you). It rests on constant emotional and psychological manipulation.
The narcissistic person does not bond in order to share, but in order to “extract” (admiration, control, resources). To manage that, they follow a very predictable cycle:
- Idealization (love bombing): at the beginning, you are perfect. They bomb you with love to hook you quickly.
- Devaluation: once you are committed, the subtle criticism begins, along with the contempt, the punishing silences and the comparisons.
- Discard: when you are no longer useful, or you try to set boundaries, they discard you with absolute coldness, blaming you for the whole failure.
Signs that your ex-partner was (or is) narcissistic
Putting a name to what you have lived through is vital in order to start letting go of the guilt. Pay attention to these manipulation tactics:
- Gaslighting: they make you doubt your own memory and sanity with phrases like “I never said that,” “You’re exaggerating” or “You’re too sensitive.”
- Projection: they constantly accuse you of the very things they are doing (for example, they accuse you of being controlling while they go through your phone).
- Triangulation: they bring third parties in (ex-partners, friends, family) to create jealousy and insecurity and make you compete for their attention.
- A complete lack of empathy: your pain, your tiredness or your problems have no room. If you are struggling, they get angry because you have stopped paying attention to them.
The aftermath: why willpower is not enough to heal
When you manage to leave (or they discard you), it is not enough to “move on.” The human brain reacts to narcissistic abuse by developing what is known as a traumatic bond.
You find yourself experiencing symptoms consistent with Complex Post-Traumatic Stress (C-PTSD):
- Constant anxiety and a state of hypervigilance.
- Insomnia and recurring nightmares.
- Cognitive dissonance: you know they hurt you, and yet you feel a compulsive need to get in touch with them (withdrawal).
Trauma therapy for narcissistic abuse in Málaga (and online)
Traditional supportive therapy (“going to talk”) often falls short for treating these effects. You need an approach that repairs your nervous system.
At PsicoDiversa, our psychology center in Málaga, we specialize in trauma therapy. We use methods backed by scientific evidence to dismantle the damage of narcissistic abuse:
- EMDR therapy: it lets us reprocess the painful memories and the manipulation, easing the load of anxiety you feel when you think about that person.
- Rebuilding your identity: we help you reconnect with the person you were before the relationship dimmed you.
