Málaga is not just about the sea. We are incredibly privileged to be surrounded by mountains: the Montes de Málaga, the Sierra de Mijas, El Torcal… green spaces that are true lungs, not only for the city but for our minds.

You have probably noticed at some point that after a walk in the forest, problems seem a little smaller. This is not a coincidence. Today we tell you why walking among pine trees can do you as much good as you think.

What is Therapeutic Hiking? (It is not just trekking)

It is important to make a distinction. This is not a sports route to see who reaches the top first, nor a tourist excursion. It is an activity guided by a psychologist, using nature as a setting to work on mindfulness and emotional connection.

It is walking with intention: to lower the volume of mental noise and turn up the volume of the senses.

4 benefits of “Forest Therapy” for your brain

Science supports what we intuitively feel: nature heals.

1. Significant reduction in cortisol

Studies show that spending time in forest environments significantly reduces cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and lowers blood pressure. In a hyperconnected world, the silence of the mountains has a calming effect you can feel.

2. “Soft attention” to rest the mind

In the city we use “directed attention” (watching out for cars, looking at traffic lights, reading notifications), which exhausts the brain. In nature we activate “fascination-based attention”: we look at the leaves, the clouds, the path… This allows your frontal lobe to rest and recharge.

3. Emotional regulation through the body

While walking, we put the body in motion. This helps release the stored energy of anxiety or frustration. The bilateral movement (walking while moving your arms and legs) helps process emotions and release accumulated tension.

4. The power of the group and shared silence

Walking together, at a calm pace and in small groups, has an effect of its own: sharing the path with other people who are also seeking well-being, sometimes talking and sometimes in comfortable silence, reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Therapeutic activities in Málaga: your emotional gym

At PsicoDiversa we believe therapy does not always have to take place within four walls. Mindful hiking can bring together:

  • Guided breathing in nature.
  • Art therapy using natural elements.
  • Grounding: techniques to come back to the present.

If this sounds familiar, in therapy groups in Málaga we explain how we approach it in session.
