Málaga is not just about the sea. We are incredibly privileged to be surrounded by mountains: the Montes de Málaga, the Sierra de Mijas, El Torcal… green spaces that are true lungs not only for the city, but also for our minds.

You have probably noticed that after a walk in the forest, problems seem a little smaller. This is not a coincidence. At PsicoDiversa, we take therapy outside the consulting room with our Therapeutic Hiking activities. Today, we explain why walking among pine trees can be just as healing as a session on the couch.

What is Therapeutic Hiking? (It’s not just trekking)

It is important to make a distinction. This is not a sports route to see who reaches the top first, nor a tourist excursion. Therapeutic Hiking is an activity guided by psychologists, where we use nature as a setting to work on mindfulness and emotional connection.

We walk with intention: to lower the volume of mental noise and increase the volume of our senses.

4 Benefits of “Forest Therapy” for your brain

Science supports what we intuitively feel: nature heals.

1. Significant reduction in cortisol

Studies show that spending time in forest environments significantly reduces cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and lowers blood pressure. In a hyperconnected world, the silence of the mountains is the best natural anxiolytic.

2. “Soft attention” to rest the mind

In the city, we use “directed attention” (watching out for cars, traffic lights, notifications), which exhausts the brain. In nature, we activate “fascination-based attention”: we observe leaves, clouds, the path… This allows the frontal lobe to rest and recharge.

3. Emotional regulation through the body

While walking, the body is in motion. This helps release stored energy from anxiety or frustration. The bilateral movement (arms and legs while walking) has an effect similar to EMDR: it helps process emotions.

4. The power of the group and shared silence

Our outings in Málaga take place in small groups. Sharing the path with others who are also seeking well-being, sometimes talking and sometimes enjoying comfortable silence, reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Therapeutic activities in Málaga: your emotional gym

At PsicoDiversa, we believe therapy does not always have to take place within four walls. Our mindful hiking sessions integrate:

  • Guided breathing in nature
  • Art therapy using natural elements
  • Grounding techniques to reconnect with the present moment

Would you join us for a walk?

You don’t need to be an experienced hiker. Our routes are accessible, and the goal is enjoyment, not physical performance. If you feel you need to disconnect in order to reconnect with yourself, this activity is for you.

Check our schedule of upcoming therapeutic walks in the Montes de Málaga and surrounding areas. Your mental health will thank you for this breath of fresh air.
